New Progress in Injection Molding of Glass Composites in Germany

According to European Plastics News,on January 10,2012,German research institutes made new progress in developing the process of injecting plastic and glass together.

The KuGlas(Kunststoff-Glas)project at the L'Lüdenscheid Institute of Plastics,which was first proposed at the Institute's Conference on Innovative Surface Materials in September 2010,is making progress.

The Institute believes that the technology has great potential in the production of dashboard display screens in high-end cars.

The Institute announced in August 2011 that the KuGlas project had studied more than 40 tackifiers.The results show that some of the tackifiers form strong bonds between glass and a variety of plastics tested,including ABS,nylon,polycarbonate,PC/ABS,and acrylic.Further studies have shown that the probability of glass breakage can be reduced to zero by foam secondary molding.

Stefan Schmidt,Managing Director of KIMW,presented a sample of the overmolded and one-piece KuGlas to Plastics News Europe at Fakuma 2011,where he revealed that the entire glass surface would then be back-molded.

Now that the goal has been achieved,the Institute presented the new process at Euromold 2011 and has applied for a patent.

Pentacon,headquartered in Dresden,Germany,announced a new patented process for glass overmolding at Fakuma 2011.The process addresses the difficulties associated with glass injection molding,including the brittleness of glass and the tolerance of±0.2 mm for 2 mm thick window glass.Glitter due to glass thickness tolerances can only be eliminated by the addition of special elastomer elements.
